New Jersey declares itself ‘pizza capital of the world’ after bagel debacle

New Jersey’s official Twitter account has started yet another food fight with a bold tweet declaring itself “the pizza capital of the world.”

Yes, the world — as in, New Jersey thinks they have better pies than both New York and Italy. This is the second time the account has gone viral for trying to scrap with regions that arguably have already claimed a superior title. Last month, the official Twitter account questionably declared itself “Bagel capital of the world.”

The hot take was posted in advance of National Pizza Day coming up this Sunday. Twitter users quickly chimed in to debate the merits of New Jersey’s pie sensibilities.

“NJ girl, now PA resident, and I AM HERE FOR THIS. NJ pizza rules!” @tremonenta tweeted.

Another user slammed New York for having too many “trash spots” but conceded there’s some good pizza in the Empire State.

“You got a better chance of walking into a random pizzeria and getting a good slice in nj than you do in ny,” @toastfancy tweeted. “NYC is too saturated in the pizza market, so they have too many trash spots. Also some of the best spots too tho.”

Peter Genovese, a food columnist for NJ.com, also chimed in: “As the person who has eaten at more NJ pizzerias than anyone on earth, I support this message,” he tweeted.

New Jersey Senator Michael Testa also defended his state’s pizza.

“Finally, something @GovMurphy and I agree on,” he wrote.

But some Jersey residents rightfully came New York’s defense.

“Really I’m from NJ. I consider NYC THE PIZZA CAPITAL,” @ShevlinThee tweeted. “South Jersey pizza is gross. I make my own. Central & North Jersey pizza much much better.”

“This tweet is so ducking New Jersey,” another Twitter user said.
